Should insurance cover weight loss programs? Dr. Judith Wurtman poses this important question. Many insurers will pay for bariatric surgery, but they won't pay for over-the-counter nutritional supports or commercial weight loss programs. Is this rational since people who have surgery typically lose more weight faster? Or should all plans designed to help people lose weight be supported by health insurance?

Since insurance penalizes us for being OVER weight, it only makes sense they should provide as much assistance as possible to us in LOSING weight. I also believe they should reward us when we have LOST the weight, especially if we did it all on our own, with no assistance from our insurance company.
