Tuesday Afternoon Quickie

I can't believe what I'm reading, so I thought I'd share so you could be as amazed as I.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that Congress should give President Obama the authority to increase the debt limit as long as he's in office. They're even considering three automatic debt ceiling hikes unless Congress steps in to stop them. Huh? Yup, you read it right. Too bad he didn't discuss it with anybody else in his party before he said that. Now, he's feeling the fury on the right. They have been counting on using the debt ceiling issue as leverage to get concessions from the Dems and President Obama. McConnell also accused the President of deliberately deceiving the American public in the debt ceiling discussions.

Meanwhile the House GOP seem to be completely falling apart, with Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor battling each other for the hearts of the party. Speaker Boehner is angry that he could not work out a "grand bargain" with the President because he did not have the support of the party, and Cantor said there simply will not be a compromise unless the President and the Dems drop the issue of taxes entirely.

I don't know about you, but I'm worried that all the political posturing is missing the point. Jobs. Infrastructure. Jobs. The economy. Jobs. Health care. Jobs. But if the debt ceiling is not raised, Social Security checks may be late, says the President. Who's looking out for us little guys?

I'll leave it there until tomorrow morning, when I hope I will awake to shocking news that everything is all going to be okay. Jennifer

  1. Dear President Obama,

Hold your ground. Raise the debt ceiling, let the Bush tax cuts to the rich expire. Leave Social Security, Medicare/caid alone for now. Support small business by encouraging investment and guarantee small biz loans. All this will create jobs.

    Why is this so difficult?

    CC John Boehner

  2. I read today that if a compromise isn't met, that Social Security checks will most likely be the first thing cut. That has a lot of people I know worried!!
