Even before what was supposed to be the big meeting today at the White House on the deficit, John Boehner rejected the White House's proposal of a "grand bargain" that would have raised about $100 billion per year in revenue over 10 years in exchange for THREE TIMES that amount in spending cuts. Boehner says it's the White House's fault for insisting on raising revenue by closing tax loopholes for the rich and corporations. Even with Medicare, Medicaid, and the inviolate Social Security on the table, the GOP won't even talk about tax hikes of any kind.
Where they go from here is anybody's guess. Jennifer
